Multi-level parking in Hyderabad fails to take off

The cause of concern among companies are reportedly the cost of parking technology involved and the time period required for the companies to break even.

HYDERABAD: The ever increasing vehicular traffic in the city poses a pertinent question: that of parking spaces.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, to tackle the problem of parking spaces, in 2015 came up with the proposal of multi-level parking facility in different parts of the city. The concept of such parking lots, which could  accommodate over 400 cars each at key areas, have not taken off yet and are finding not many buyers now, a year later.

The project was to be executed in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

The civic body had released a Request For Proposal (RFP) in October 2016 inviting private companies to invest in the project. However, the private companies, after a meeting with the GHMC officials, have now requested for more time to study the feasibility of the project. The cause of concern among these companies are reportedly the cost of parking technology involved and the time period required for the companies to break even.

When contacted, GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said: “There have been few responses to the pre-bid conference and they (private companies) have asked for more time. We have given them time till February 27 to respond.”
