THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Swaragandharvam’ a book on the musical journey of well-known playback singer K J Yesudas, written by Saji Sreevalsom was released here the other day.

Releasing the book, Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph said the fact that K J Yesudas was a singer committed to the society could not be forgotten.

Joseph said that Yesudas’s efforts had prompted the government to launch free cochlear implant surgery scheme for deaf and dumb children from poor families. Each surgery which would otherwise cost Rs 12 lakh is conducted free of cost. So far, 460 people had achieved hearing and speech abilities through these surgeries.

One of the children could sing a prayer song at a function, he said. This has been made possible due to efforts of Yesudas, the minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, CPM politburo member M A Baby MLA said that research should be conducted on the style of rendering of music by Yesudas.

He said Madras Music Academy had brought dishonour  to itself by not giving its Sangeeta Kalanidhi award yet to Yesudas.
