VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources authorities are gearing up to undertake extensive Operation and Maintenance (O&M) works across the Krishna Delta, with proposals in the final stage to improve irrigation efficiency ahead of the cropping season. The delta, fed by the Krishna River, supports a vast network of canals and drains that are crucial for agriculture in the region.

It may be noted that the Krishna canal system comprises 20 main drains stretching over 537.37 km, 20 medium drains covering 470.65 km, and as many as 702 minor drains extending to 1,755 km.

In addition, 208 small canals cater to the irrigation needs of farmers in NTR district and Krishna district, reflecting the scale and complexity of the irrigation infrastructure.

Officials said the proposed O&M works will focus on desilting, removal of aquatic weeds, strengthening of canal bunds, and repairs to regulators and control structures.

These measures are aimed at restoring the carrying capacity of canals and ensuring smooth and uninterrupted water flow across the delta, particularly to tail-end areas.

Last year, authorities sanctioned around 700 O&M works, of which nearly 70 per cent have been completed. Encouraged by the progress, a similar number of works are expected to be taken up this year as well. Officials indicated that the proposals are currently being finalized and funds will be sanctioned constituency-wise.

Importantly, officials acknowledged that comprehensive O&M activities had not been undertaken for nearly five years prior to the present government assuming office, leading to silt accumulation and weed growth in several canal stretches.

To address these issues, the government initiated large-scale maintenance works last year, providing relief to farmers dependent on canal irrigation.

However, experts underline that canal maintenance is a continuous process. With recurring silt deposits and rapid weed growth, regular cleaning of drains and canals is essential to prevent disruptions in water supply.

“We are preparing the works and the proposals are in the final stage. Funds will be sanctioned constituency-wise, and in a couple of days the works will be finalised,” said Gunakar, Irrigation Superintendent Engineer Krishna district to TNIE. Farmers have expressed hope that timely execution of these works will ensure adequate and equitable water supply, supporting agricultural activities across the Krishna delta region.
