He made a mark in Malayalam industry through family dramas that explored the equations shared by couples and the so-called ‘perfect families’.

Akku Akbar, the man behind several hit family subjects, is in no mood to deviate from his favourite genre. Akku’s next venture Mathai Kuzhapakaranalla, will hit the screens next week. It is a serious family story told in a humorous vein. Jayasurya will play the lead in the movie along with Mukesh, Lakshmi  Gopalaswami and Bhama.

Says Akku Akbar: “Mathai Kuzhappakaranalla is a pure family story but it is treated humorously. It is the tale of Nandagopan, a doctor played by Mukesh, and his wife who lives separately following difference in opinion. It is then that Mathai, an autodriver, runs into their lives. He tries to solve the rift between the couple and Mathai does that with the aid of Anna, a staff at the family court. Bhama plays Anna in the movie.”

Akku says the movie will be an experience that every family can relate to. “Every scene in the movie will be something that has happened in our families. In that way, this is a very realistic story. Moreover, I aim to give the society a message on how families collapse for the lack of heart-to-heart talks,” says the director.

Lakshmi Gopalaswamy plays the wife of Dr Nandagopan. She is someone who was born in a rich family. She struggles to get along with her husband who is a dedicated doctor. The difference in their class and thoughts draw them apart. This is when Mathai enters the scene. Through his tactical interference, Mathai manages to bring them together.

The director says the humorous element help avoid a preachy tone in the movie.

“The characters talk about issues between the husband and wife and the woes of the children caught in between the power struggle in a general way. They talk about it in a natural way,” says Akku.

Akku Akbar adds that the movie touches upon the lives of people of different class. While Lakshmi Gopalaswamy depicts upper class women and her life, Mukesh’s character is about the woes of middle class people while Jayasurya plays a lower middle class man with his share of struggles.

Besides, Mathai Kuzhappakaranalla will also have Jayasurya speaking in Thrissur accent. However, the director says he wanted Mathai speaking pure Thrissur slang because the accent has a innocence to it. “I wanted Mathai to be a youngster who is naive and humorous and the Thrissur slang can give this,” says Akku Akbar.

The director also adds that the movie will have just a song. “There will only be a song and that is to introduce the character of Jayasurya. The heavy storyline doesn’t leave much space for songs,” says Akku Akbar.

The script and screenplay of the movie is by the director himself.

The movie has been produced by Anto Joseph. Pradeep Nair cranks the camera and Anand Madhusoodanan has composed the music.
