The story of Karinkunnam 6S begins behind the bars. A handful of convicts are being trained by their volleyball coach, a woman. But, what  begins as a routine fitness coaching soon snowballs into a major thriller.

Deepu Karunakaran’s ‘Karinkunnam 6S’, an Eid release, is an out-and-out sports movie about Vandana, a woman coach, and the jailbirds she trains.

Says the director: “There are a lot of training programmes undertaken inside jails that the world doesn’t know much about. One such game is volleyball. We got the thread of the story from this,” says Deepu Karunakaran.

However, the director says that the story isn’t based on any real-life incident, but a fictional account.

Manju Warrier plays the football coach Vandana in the movie. “She may be a tough coach, but Vandana is not your stereotypical hard and bold sportswoman. She is very soft and humorous person who get along with people well. In fact, I want to break that stereotype,” he adds. So, is Manju Warrier’s role tailor made for her? The director says its the other way round. “In fact, she had to remodel herself for the role of Vandana. Manju took great pains for the role and even undertook volleyball classes. She was trained by volleyball coach Harilal. Her dedication towards the craft is impeccable,” says the director.

Besides Manju, the movie also has Anoop Menon, Sudev Nair, Sudheer Karamana,  Babu Antony playing important roles. “We have an extensive cast of 41 actors and every role is significant,” says the actor.

The movie was mostly shot in Poojappura Central Jail and Deepu Karunakaran says he had his share of challenges. “Shooting for the movie wasnt easy. In jail, we had to be very disciplined. We had to be there on time and leave on time. Thanks to our crew, it all went well,” says Deepu.

Arunlal Ramachandran has penned the story and music is done by Rahul Raj. The movie is being produced by Jayalal Menon and Anil Biswas under the banner of Lemon Productions.
