Datia bridge tragedy, 2013: In one of the biggest stampedes that India witnessed in recent times, 115 people were killed and over 100 were injured on a bridge leading to Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh on 14 October 2013. Devotees were crushed to death under the feet of fellow worshippers, while others drowned after falling or jumping into the Sindh river. (Photo | PTI)

Allahabad Kumbh Mela stampede, 2013: 29 women, 12 men, and an eight-year-old girl were killed when an overbridge collapse and a police lathi charge that followed caused a stampede in Allahabad railway station on 10 February 2013. Allahabad was hosting the rotating Hindu festival of 'Kumbh Mela', and that year it was considered to be the year of 'Maha Kumbh Mela', which comes around only once every 144 years. A last minute platform change for a Patna-bound train triggered a stampede at the New Delhi railway station on 16 May 2010, resulting in the death of two persons. The incident taught Delhi authorities the need for better facilities and crowd management in public places.
