HYDERABAD: Residents of Ahmad Nagar, located at one end of the Amberpet ward near the Sewage Treatment Plant, are tired of a public nuisance that regularly occurs in their area - fistfights between warring groups of people.

A resident of the area who did not want to be named said, “Many people, especially youngsters who want to settle disputes through beating up each other decide to meet at Ahmad Nagar as the area is secluded and no none passes through here at nights.

There is no regular police patrol as well. Recently two groups consisting of at least 50 people gathered in the area for fist fights.”

He further said, “The residents have now decided to write to the Assistant Commissioner of Police to ask for setting up CCTV cameras in our area for which we are ready to pay half the amount.”

Police department does not seem to follow even basic norms of sanitation, which is visible at the police quarters in Central Police Lines in Amberpet ward. The amount of garbage - most of which is plastic, that is accumulating on a daily basis in the area is of hazardous levels.

Residents of localities adjacent to CPL pass through the area and throw their household garbage here as there is no one to question them about it and this has been going on since years.

Lack of streetlights
A Bhikshapati, a local leader said that one important civic issue in the ward has been lack of streetlights. He said, “In the interior areas of the ward there is a serious lack of streetlights. The issue was brought to notice of GHMC officials many times but to no use.”

Poor sewage lines
Mohd Farooquddin, former corporator of Amberpet said hat although the population in the area has increased the sewage lines have not been changed to carry the present load as a resul choking of drains is a regular issue.

Like the Telangana Rashtra Samithi corporator from Golnaka, the Amberpet corporator also belonging to TRS, Jagan Puli too did not speak regarding his constituency despite repeated attempts by Express.

Onslaughting on environment in Amberpet
Amberpet ward is witnessing a silent onslaught on the environment about which neither the local leaders nor the government authorities like Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation or Telangana State Pollution Control Board seem to be bothered about. The ward has a solid waste transit point that is located few meters away from the banks of Musi river.

All along the road that leads to transit point are heaps of construction debris dumped along the road, which is a clear violation of Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules which attract penal action under Environment Protection Act. The dumping of construction debris is one way how lands are encroached in Hyderabad surrounding lakes. Not just this but on the road one can also see chicken slaughter units, waste paper recycling units and cylinder go-down units functioning.
