KOCHI: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) on Thursday re-launched crackdown against the use of sun-film on windows and windshields of vehicles.

On the first day, inspections were carried out in the Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts, in which 146 vehicles were booked.

According to MVD officials, ‘Operation Sunlight’ was launched following a directive by Transport Commissioner S Ananthakrishnan. “We received information about rampant use of sun film in vehicles, in violation of the Supreme Court directive. In a large number of vehicles plying in Ernakulam and the neighbouring districts, mainly cars, sun film is used illegally.

Several sun film units are still operating in the State,” said an MVD official.   Motorists booked during the drive have been asked to remove the sun films used in their vehicles immediately, and fines of up to `500 were slapped on them.   It was in 2012 the Supreme Court banned the use of ‘tinted glass’ and sun film in  vehicles.
