MUMBAI: In a career spanning four decades, Jagjit Singh has created a niche with popular numbers such as ‘Meri zindagi kisi aur ki’, ‘Mere naam ka koi aur hai’, ‘Apni marzi se kahan apne safar ke hum hain’, ‘Wo jo hum mein tumme qaraar tha’, ‘Patta-patta boota-boota haal hamaara jaane hai’ and ‘Hoshwalo ko khabar’.

Though his parents wanted him to be an IAS officer, destiny had it otherwise, as the young Jagjit rose slowly from the rank of a singer to a legend in Indian ghazal, earning a name on par with the great Mehdi Hassan.

Jagjit Singh has also sung for popular movies such as ‘Arth’, ‘Prem Geet’, ‘Sarfarosh’ and ‘Tarqeeb’. He has sung in languages like Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali.

He had also lent his voice to former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee’s poems in the albums ‘Nayi Disha’ and ‘Samvedna’.
