In a major development, the Mumbai rape accused have revealed that the 22-year-old photojournalist was not the only girl they raped inside the Shakti Mills compound. Police have now come to know of at least three other cases of sexual assault by the accused.
Two of the five accused, under sustained interrogation by the Mumbai police, have confessed that they were involved in three other sexual assaults within the compound.
Police officials said the accused had admitted to having gangraped a rag picker and also a commercial sex worker whom they had brought there.
The third incident involved a young couple who was found inside the compound by the accused.
In this case, the accused claimed to have only molested the victim. All these incidents took place within the mills compound around the last six months.
Officials said that they would be trying to trace the victims but admitted that it would be a difficult task.
They added that while the accused have confessed to only three assaults, the police suspect that there could be more such cases.
Meanwhile, in another development, the police are on the lookout for a rag picker who was present at the scene of the crime and whom police claim was an eyewitness at the scene.
In an attempt to build a strong case, the Mumbai police are also relying on forensic evidence. Throughout Tuesday, a team from Gujarat Forensic Laboratory was at the Shakti Mills Compound in order to gather more forensic evidence.
The police have already subjected the accused to a potency test at the J J hospital and have also recovered the clothes worn by two of the accused on the day of the rape and sent it for forensic analysis.
