MUMBAI: The special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. The agency wants him for his alleged role in a terror case.

Last week the Enforcement Directorate had secured a non-bailable warrant against Naik in a money laundering case from the PMLA court.

NIA had registered a case against Naik under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act last year. The agency told the court that Naik didn’t appear before it even after three summons were issued and it would need Interpol’s help to bring him back to India.

“Issue NBW against Naik,” said Special Judge V V Patil.

Naik, who is believed to be in United Arab Emirates, had left India last year after perpetrators of Dhaka terror attack said that they were inspired by Naik’s speeches. The NIA had then registered a case against him and office bearers of his Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) for promoting enmity between groups of society.
