NEW DELHI: Days after 20 people were killed and over 90 injured in a train accident at khatauli in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress today sought the resignation of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu while urging him to take moral responsibility for the mishap.

The Congress attack came a day after the railways took action against several officials for the lapse.

"We demand that Suresh Prabhu should resign immediately," congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said while noting that the Congress leaders had a tradition of taking moral responsibility for such tragedies in the past.

He cited the examples of former Railway minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and former aviation minister Madhavrao Scindia to support his claim.

Targeting Prabhu, the Congress spokesperson said that functioning of the railways had suffered immensely under the minister and over 300 lives had been lost in around 27 rail accidents in the past three years.

"It was a man-made a tragedy, " said Tewari while adding that sending a top official on leave over negligence was like mocking the mishap.
