MUMBAI: After intervention of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Mumbai Police acted swiftly and arrested a man who trolled Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi and threatened to rape her minor daughter. Girish Maheshwari, 36, was arrested from Bavla near Ahmedabad on Sunday night.

The Mumbai Police was assisted by the local police in apprehending the accused. Maheshwari was charged under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), in addition to the IT Act and also relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Subsequently, the accused was brought to Mumbai, where a court sent him to police custody till July 10.
Chaturvedi had filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police on July 2. Promptly, the MHA sent its directive to the Mumbai Police the next day. The police then registered a case against Twitter user @GirishK1605 for threatening to rape Chaturvedi’s 10-year-old daughter. The tweet was found deleted later.

In her police complaint, Chaturvedi said that the Twitter user, despite using an image of Lord Ram in the profile picture, didn’t think twice before issuing such a threat. The MHA, meanwhile, asked Twitter to furnish details of the account that was used to issue the threat. The Congress spokesperson said she faced a barrage of abuses on the social media after a “fake” comment on the rape of a seven-year-old girl at Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh was attributed to her.

“I would like to thank @MumbaiPolice , @DelhiPolice , especially @IPSMadhurVerma and @CPDelhi . Also my gratitude to @HMOIndia & @rajnathsingh ji for taking this up (sic),” the Congress spokesperson tweeted.Chaturvedi had received support from party seniors. Congress veteran Ahmed Patel had tweeted in her support.
