Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Kumar Deka gets one-year extension

Counter-terrorism expert Deka, a 1988 batch IPS officer, is renowned for his pivotal role in combating northeast insurgency and dismantling the Indian Mujahideen.

NEW DELHI: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, approved the proposal to extend the services of Director of the Intelligence Bureau (DIB) Tapan Kumar Deka, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) said in an order.

Counter-terrorism expert Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1988 batch IPS officer, is renowned for his pivotal role in combating northeast insurgency and dismantling the Indian Mujahideen. He belongs to the Himachal Pradesh cadre.

Deka has served in the northeast since the 1990s and is an expert on northeast insurgencies. He was also involved in the investigation into the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and played a key role in bringing the culprits to justice.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Shri Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:88), as Director, Intelligence Bureau for a period of one year beyond 30.06.2024 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rule, 1958,” the DoPT order read.

As the IB chief, Deka is also known for leading from the front in successfully running campaigns against left-wing extremism, confining Maoists to Bastar district in Chhattisgarh.

It is learned from sources that Deka is currently on an official visit to Washington DC.
