NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Umar Ansari, son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in a criminal case registered against him during the 2022 assembly elections for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

A two-judge bench of the top court, led by Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra granted relief to Umar Ansari after hearing from his senior lawyer Kapil Sibal that other accused has been granted regular bail in the matter.

Taking these submissions into record, the apex court granted him bail, with certain conditions.

While asking Ansari to participate in the trial of the case, in which he was allegedly involved, the top court made it clear that the offending statement given by him is a matter of trial.

The Uttar Pradesh government objected to the plea of Ansari seeking bail and asked the apex court that he must first surrender before trial court and then seek bail.
