SRINAGAR: A militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in a village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The encounter between militants and security forces began in Ahrama village in Ganderbal on Tuesday evening during a search operation.

"During the night of March 31, 2026, the cordon was tactically reorganised amid intermittent firing. Our troops effectively retaliated with a calibrated response, resulting in one terrorist being eliminated," Srinagar-based Army's 15 Corps said in a post on X.

Acting on specific information, a joint contingent of police and the army launched a search operation in Ahrama village after receiving inputs about the presence of militants.

As the security personnel were conducting the search operation, they came under fire from militants hiding in the village.

The troops returned fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire.

Sources said security forces have received inputs that a group of two to three militants are trapped within the cordon, and additional troops have been rushed to the village to tighten the siege.

Sources added that security personnel are using drones for aerial surveillance.

This is the first encounter in the Valley in 2026.
