BHUBANESWAR: The eggs sold in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are normal and there is no evidence of the availability of plastic eggs, indicated the preliminary report submitted by State Food Safety officials. On April 21, the State Government had ordered an investigation to check whether fake eggs are being sold in the State following an allegation. Food safety officials were asked to collect samples from districts and send to public health laboratory for quality testing.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the allegation was baseless and the availability of plastic eggs was just a rumour. “The egg samples sent for tests came out normal. The eggs put into test were natural and safe. There was no evidence of any deformity and unnaturality,” said a Health Department official. Sources said egg samples from all 30 districts were collected following the inquiry order and sent for tests. While the report on 10 districts including Khurda, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda and Balangir has been received initially, the report on rest 20 districts is expected shortly. “Not a single egg with any kind of unnaturality was found from the samples collected from different places in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The allegation comes out to be fake. However, we have kept a close watch and will continue to check the stocks regularly,” the officer added.
Earlier, Commissioner of Food Safety RP Singh had asked all food safety officers, designated officers-cum-ADMO (Public Health) of 30 districts and City Health Officers to collect samples for tests.
