GUNTUR: As many as 56 cows perished after eating poisonous shoots at Daida village in Gurazala mandal of Guntur district. According to preliminary reports, and also officials of the Animal Husbandry Department who inspected the carcasses, the incident occurred after the cows consumed poisonous shoots at Daida village.

All the 56 cows belonged to one Lakshmiah of Nalgonda district in Telangana State. He brought the animals to Daida village as there was not enough fodder in his native place - Kesarajupalli village of Nalgonda district in Telangana State.

Lakshmiah had let his cows out to graze at Daida village on Sunday evening. When they were brought back home at night, the farmer found them acting strange. Within a few minutes, the animals started to discharge foam from their mouths and nose. Veterinary doctors were brought in but despite their best efforts, the animals died early on Monday. The price of each cow is `26,000. On receipt of information, Gurazala RDO E Murali rushed to the spot and submitted a report to district collector Kona Sasidhar. He said that they will hand over the report to the officials concerned in Telangana to grant compensation to the farmer who suffered huge loss.
