Tribal students in Karnataka to get stipend from February

The State government has decided to give stipends to students belonging to Koraga and Jenukuruba communities until they get jobs.

BENGALURU: The state government has decided to give stipends to students belonging to Koraga and Jenukuruba communities until they get jobs.

Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya on Saturday said the population of both the communities was declining. “The number of people from these communities who pursue education is also less and hence we want to encourage them,” he said.

Those who pursue college education after class 10 will get Rs 2,000 every month; those who pursue bachelor’s courses will get Rs 2,500; if they complete their graduation, they will be paid Rs 3,500 and in case they complete their post-graduation, they will get Rs 4,500 per month.

He also announced free ration for people belonging to Gowdalu and Hasaluru tribes. “The population of these tribes is only 5,000. The scheme will start on February 1,” he said.

The government will hold a convention for Adivasis in Mysuru on February 1. Apart from providing facilities to various tribes like sewing units and facilitating loans, the government will also give title deeds to several beneficiaries who are forest dwellers.
