KOLAR: A three-day-old male baby and his mother were injured in a hospital after the cement plaster from the ceiling fell on them following heavy rains. The incident occurred on Monday night at Sri Narasimharaju District Hospital in Kolar.

The mother Nethra and her baby were immediately shifted to Indra Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Bengaluru for treatment as the baby sustained injuries on the head. The baby and his mother are stable.

Sources said that a small portion of the ceiling plaster in the post-natal ward came down on the wash basin and surrounding beds causing injuries. About thirty women and children were admitted in the post natal ward. Hospital staff said that when the plaster fell, the women in the ward were rushed out with their babies immediately.

Kolar District Health Officer Dr Vijay Kumar said the building was thirty year old and water had stagnated on the roof week due to heavy rains and blocked drains. This led to seepage of water into the roof and loosening of the plaster. Following the incident, the PWD authorities rushed to the spot to repair the portion.
