KOCHI: A python that created panic among residents of the Railway Quarters here was caught alive by two locals while it was slithering through the residential area of the railways at Wellington Island.

"It was about 10 p.m on Saturday that the snake was spotted near the house of our neighbour. Radhakrishnan and Divine, near to whose house the snake was spotted, managed to trap and put it in a gunny bag," said Manju, a resident.

This eight-ft-long reptile was one of the many snakes which were scaring the residents of the area including those of the railways and the Cochin Port Trust.

"The snake, weighing about 16 kg, was kept in our house before the Harbour police came to take it on Sunday," Manju said.

"Around four years ago, a similar snake was caught alive from this place. This had prompted the authorities to launch a cleaning drive during which the bushes and the wild growth of plants were removed," said the residents. "There are more pythons and other poisonous snakes in the area, endangering the lives of people," said Manju.
