KOCHI: “Let us see in the Asian Games,” Joseph Abraham had told Express with a shy smile after the disappointing performance in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last month. And on Thursday, at the Aoti Main Stadium in Guangzhou, it was promise fulfilled for the 29-year old hurdler. As he skipped past rivals to a gleaming gold in the men’s 400 m hurdles in the Asian Games, the Mundakkayam native had converted his silver won at the same track in the Asian Athletics Championship last year to the coveted yellow metal. Joseph held on after pulling away from the field at the final bend clocking his season’s best timing of 49.96 seconds to clinch India’s fourth gold from the athletics track. Joseph, the National record holder in the event had received the Arjuna award this year. Adding to Kerala’s joy was Tintu Luka’s first medal in a major international event, a bronze in the women’s 800 m.
