TRIPUNITHURA: The staging of the Kurumkuzhal Pattu, as part of the vilakkuezhunellippu, at the Sree Poornathrayeesha Temple added a serene ambience to the ongoing Vrischikolsavam, on its seventh day. The music accentuated the beauty of the venue with the presence of fifteen caparisoned elephants and flame lit torches.
The procession started with the Nadaswaram recital followed by Maddala Pattu, Kombu Pattu and Kurumkuzhal Pattu.
The Kurumkuzhal solo has many similarities with North Indian Shehnai, the initial pace being very similar to Athivilambith Kaal of Hindustani Shehnai. Kurumkuzhal, as a solo, is performed at many temple processions in Kerala.
It will be performed on all nights before the formal beginning of the Panchari Melam.
From the fourth night onwards, vilakkuezhunellippu will take more time so as to offer Kanikka on Thrikketta with the duration of the night procession to gradually increase.
To fill the space between the Kombupattu and Panchaari Melam, Kurumkuzhal Pattu will be narrated accompanied by Chenda and Elathaalam.
On Sunday night Velappaaya Nandanan presented the Kurumkuzhal Pattu narrating the nuances of Carnatic ragam Sankaraabharanam.
The narration was very similar to that of Panchaari Melam, slow paced Vilambith Kaalam without any accompaniment. Padmasree Peruvanam Kuttan Marar accompanied him on Chenda and Peruvanam Anilkumar on Elathaalam.
