Maneka Gandhi calls for forming animal welfare forums across Kerala

Maneka Gandhi said animal lovers should develop ties with politicians, police, lawyers and local people so that issues related with animal welfare are better presented and brought to the attention of authorities.

Animal-lovers and animal rights activists should form animal welfare forums across the state, urged People For Animals chairperson Maneka Gandhi.

Speaking at the ‘Talk on animal rights’ organised by People For Animals Trivandrum chapter here on Monday, Maneka Gandhi also stressed the need for animal rights activists to be part of the system for ensuring that policies are implemented and said that nothing can be gained by staying outside the system.

“Animal lovers should develop contacts with politicians, police, lawyers and local people so that issues related with animal welfare are better presented and brought to  the attention of authorities.

Animal lovers should also develop ties with similar groups like environmentalists. The unity  groups with similar interests would be helpful in gaining more strength while fighting for various causes’’ she pointed out.  Saying that there are people-friendly politicians, Maneka praised the Kerala MPs ‘’because they are very helpful’’. She also lauded Union Minister of State Shashi Tharoor for his positive attitude towards issues related to animals.

Poet and activist Sugathakumari said that Keralites are interested only in liquor consumption, films and in buying and wearing gold and turn a blind eye to grave issues as those related to animals. Snake catcher Vava Suresh, among others, spoke.
