THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Range IG Manoj Abraham’s preliminary report on the police action against Jishnu Pranoy’s mother and relatives has ruled out any kind of atrocity.
The report submitted to state police chief Loknath Behera said the police did not behave rudely to Mahija and her relatives. Officers who were bound to maintain law and order prevented a possible security breach at the police headquarters, it said.
Manoj Abraham said there was no evidence to support the claims of Mahija and her relatives they were manhandled by the police. She was not subjected to any kind of attack or wasn’t dragged on the road as alleged.
The police carried out the normal procedures resorted to during a protest which risked the security of an important office. If not, there would have been a security breach when Mahija and 15 others staged a sit-in in front of the state police headquarters.
Six of the protestors, including Mahija and her brother Sreejith, were given permission to visit the police chief. But their insistence on visiting the SPC as a team of 16 created an issue.
The report said a detailed examination was needed to find out whether there were lapses on the part of police in handling the entire episode. It did not recommend action against any officer.
The state police chief has forwarded the report to the Chief Minister’s office. Manoj Abraham’s detailed report will be submitted on Friday. Sreejith said the report was unacceptable.
On Wednesday, Mahija had complained she and her brother were tortured by the police led by Cantonment Assistant Commissioner and the Museum sub-inspector. She was kicked and dragged on the road. Her brother too was kicked, the complaint said.
