KOTTAYAM: Senior CPI leader and the party’s national secretariat member Binoy Viswam has been given the charge of the party-state secretary following the demise of Kanam Rajendran. This decision was taken at a meeting of the CPI state executive, chaired by party general secretary D Raja in Kottayam on Sunday.

Viswam will officially take charge as the state secretary of the CPI after the party’s state council, scheduled to meet on December 28, ratifies the executive’s decision. Earlier, while taking leave for treatment, Kanam had also recommended Viswam for the position.

Speaking to the media, Raja said Viswam was unanimously elected as the state secretary. “No other names were brought up for discussion. Viswam is a strong leader with good organisational skills. He can strengthen and lead the party,” Raja said.

Known for his unwavering commitment to a simple lifestyle, Viswam said he did not consider himself a replacement for the esteemed leaders who occupied the seat before him.

“The party executive has entrusted me with this new responsibility, and I am determined to give it my all. I hope the state council’s endorsement of the executive’s decision,” he said, adding he would also try to strengthen the LDF.
