KOCHI: In a shocking incident of mob violence, a young man was beaten to death by a group of workers in Perumbavoor on Wednesday morning after being accused of theft at a plywood unit.
The incident occurred in the early hours at Mudickal, where workers at the factory routinely deposit their mobile phones before beginning work. When two phones went missing after the shift, suspicion fell on the victim, who was reportedly seen nearby. He was subsequently assaulted by a group and died on the spot.
Six migrant workers have been taken into custody in connection with the case, and their arrests are expected to be recorded soon. The deceased, believed to be a migrant worker from Assam, is yet to be identified, police said.
“All six suspects are in custody and are being interrogated. Further details will emerge after a detailed investigation,” a police officer said.
Perumbavoor, a major industrial hub, is home to a large migrant workforce, with an estimated 1 to 1.5 lakh workers living and employed in and around the municipality.
