JAGATSINGHPUR: A 10-month-old baby died after allegedly swallowing the plastic cap of a soft drink bottle in Kujang area of the district on Thursday night. The deceased infant, Sairam Das, belonged to Tentulipada village in Tirtol.

Sources said Sairam and his mother Mitali Das had come to his maternal uncle’s place at Guamunda under Kujang police limits last week. While playing on Thursday evening, the baby reportedly swallowed a plastic bottle cap that was lying on the floor. Family members rushed him to Balitutha primary health centre). As his condition deteriorated, Sairam was shifted to Kujang community health centre (CHC).

Family members alleged that despite their requests to shift the baby to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, the doctor attempted chest compressions to revive him. However, all efforts went in vain as Sairam was pronounced dead.

However, Dr R Pritam Srikumar of Kujang CHC said the cap had blocked the child’s airway for more than half an hour before he was brought to the hospital. By the time the infant reached the CHC, he had already succumbed.
