CHENNAI: Speaker R Avudaiappan on Tuesday ordered the expunction of all remarks made on the Sri Lankan Tamils’ issue from the records of the TN Assembly.

This is in the wake of an all-party resolution adopted by the House during an earlier session still remaining effective for action and in the context of Union Minister Pranab Mukherjee making a trip to the island nation on Tuesday.

It all started when the CPI member K Ramasamy raised the Lankan Tamils’ issue by making certain remarks that kept the Congress, AIADMK and PMK members on their toes. The Speaker intervened and put an end to the matter by ordering the expunction of all the remarks on the issue. Even AIADMK’s K A Senkottiayan raised a point of order on the issue to defuse the situation.

The CPI member stated that  the address made by the Governor of Tamil Nadu did not carry anything concrete on the financial autonomy to the state as also the constitutional amendment to that effect. He also deplored delay in the execution of the Sethusamudram project and blamed it on legal battle.

CPM member Marimuthu wanted the entire Cauvery delta declared as a disaster-hit region and steps taken to help the farmers there. He deplored that the workers were facing problems due to economic slowdown.

PMK member Senthamilselvan pleaded  for linking all southern rivers so that the state could tackle water problem effectively during the time of drought. He also wanted the intervention of the State Government for the release of 22 fishermen from the custody of Lankan Navy.
