VELLORE:The residents of Vasantham Nagar in the 20th ward of Vellore Corporation have been demanding basic amenities, including street-lighting, road facilities and drainage facilities for the last four years and their repeated petitions to the Vellore Corporation officials have been futile.
Residents claim that their colony has been neglected with the Ward Councilor continuing to be unavailable to answer their basic queries and demands.
Due to there being no drainage facilities in the ward, household waste-water and drainage-water stagnate in the poramboku land that is in the colony and on the main road. The groundwater in the area has been exploited for years now.
“Water availability for households from borewells has worsened day-by-day and our repeated pleas to the Councillor to prevent water from stagnating has gone in vain,” said a woman resident.
Stagnating waste-water poses serious health risks to residents. “Bad roads in the area is an additional worrying factor. Mosquitoes and waterborne diseases have affected residents for years now.”
She added due to there being no street-lighting, residents fear allowing their children out in the night.
Ward Councillor Sasikumar said, “I have been asking Corporation officials for years to take up the projects. Corporation council has passed various development projects and the local body should issue notification for tenders, which is in process.”
He added that Vasantham Nagar, before the end of the year would have its basic amenities and all projects will be completed.
