Devotees Can Take Bath Round the Clock in Mahamaham Tank

KUMBAKONAM: Even as a large number of devotees thronged the Mahamaham tank on Sunday for a holy dip the administration has announced the visitors to the festival could take bath in the tank round the clock.

As it was a Sunday thousands of devotees were seen taking dips in the Mahamaham tank. This was disclosed by G Prakash, the Director of Municipal Administration. Talking to media persons on Sunday he said arrangements have been made for devotees to take bath at any time during the festival that culminates on February 22.

"High mast lights have been erected around the tank for the devotees to take bath at any time", he added.

He further added 60 lakh litres of fresh water being pumped into daily and the same quantity being pumped out. "The chlorine content is being monitored once in 15 minutes", he added.

He further added mini-bus facility will be arranged for senior citizens, women and differently abled, from the temporary bus stands to 800-900 metres near Mahamaham tank from February 18 onwards.

The Director of Municipal administration added all the 147 temporary toilets in the Kumbakonam municipality would be put in use before Sunday evening. Except 20, all the toilets were connected to Under Ground Drainage system of the municipality. Water facility has been provided in all the toilets. Drinking water is being provided at 168 places in the town by placing a sintex tanks. They water is being filled in these tanks thrice daily for the benefit of the devotees.

To control the vector borne diseases, oil balls are being used. Further a team of workers under the direction of Chief entomologist are into mosquito control including the fogging operations, he added. As many as 700 sanitary workers from various municipalities and corporations were involved in clearing of solid waste to maintain hygiene in the temple city, he added.
