CHENNAI: Union Minister of State (MoS) for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said the foundation for doubling and electrification of tracks between Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram would be laid on December 7.

The minister said this in his official Twitter page. He said that the Madurai-Nagercoil- Thiruvananathapuram line will be doubled. Foundation stone for the doubling and electrification of railway lines in Madurai-Vanchi Maniyachi-Thoothukudi section and Vanchimaniyachi - Tirunelveli-Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram section will be laid on December 7.

Division created in 1979

In 1979, the Thiruvananthapuram division was created by bifurcating Madurai. In addition to the lines passing through Kerala, the Tirunelveli-Nagercoil and Kanniyakumari-Nagercoil-Thiru-vananthapuram lines were transferred to Thiruvanantha-puram since gauge conversion works were not completed between Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. However, the line was later developed.
