THOOTHUKUDI: Stating that Vedanta Resources, the parent company of Sterlite Industries, is one of the leading donors to both BJP and Congress governments, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged that the nexus between the metal and mining conglomerate and Union governments had resulted in environmental violations.
Yechury was here to meet the victims of Thoothukudi police firing. He met the family members of four persons, who were shot dead in police firing and expressed his condolences. Accompanied by CPI(M) State secretary K Balakrishnan and district secretary K S Arujunan and party cadre, he also met the injured persons who are recovering at Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital (TVMCH).

Yechury blamed the State police department for flouting the riot control guidelines.
He termed the incident of police firing as a pre-planned attack. Rapping the authorities he said, “Firing should have been the last option when measures such as tear gas shelling, baton-charge and usage of water cannons fail to yield result. However, the firing took place in the initial stage itself. Many were shot on their upper part of the body. This is certainly not the way to control the riot. The firing is unacceptable and undemocratic,” Sitaram Yechury said.
