HOUSTON: A diamond-studded Santa sweater dubbed as the world's "most expensive Ugly Christmas Sweater" is up for sale at a US online apparel store for a whopping USD 30,000. The bedazzled Christmas sweater has over 24,000 individually placed crystals forming an image of Santa Claus riding a unicorn through space as a ringed planet against a star-spangled background.

"The sweater is made with 24,274 individually placed Swarovski crystals and took 52 hours to create," according to the website of apparel company Tipsy Elves which teamed up with Swarovski to create the festive sweater of the season.

The extravagant sweater also comes with a luxury frame so that it may be displayed as a work of art when not being worn.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day was started in 2011 by ugly Christmas sweater lovers as a way to lighten up the busy holidays and to show off their absurdly ugly sweaters. The day has grown in popularity and is celebrated worldwide as an international event.

Now, occurring on the third Friday of December, the celebration gives holiday lovers worldwide a chance to wear their ugly Christmas sweaters.
