WARANGAL: Ragging of junior students by their seniors led to a clash between the two groups at the National Institute of Technology here on Friday.

NIT authorities have launched an internal probe apart from lodging a complaint with the police against the erring senior students.

According to police and institute officials, a group of 12 first-year B.Tech students were summoned to the Vikram Sarabhai Hostel by final-year students after lunch.

Once the juniors arrived, the seniors locked the room and started ragging them. The juniors were reportedly beaten up with belts and forced to sing and dance in the nude. When things became unbearable, the harassed junior students revolted and attacked the seniors, leading to a clash between the two groups.

NIT director T Srinivasa Rao, along with other faculty members, rushed to the hostel room on learning of the incident but the students had fled the scene by then. Two junior students who were injured were taken to the dispensary on the campus for treatment.

The institute’s authorities launched an inquiry into the incident for taking action against the final year students.

The police also registered a case against the accused and launched an investigation but are yet to identify the accused.
