TN civic polls: 57,770 candidates in fray for over 12,500 ward member posts across the state

The voting in the urban civic polls in Tamil Nadu began on Saturday at 7 AM across the state amid tight police security and arrangements including ramps to ensure hassle-free experience to the differently- abled. Kamakshi Subramaniam is the co-founder of SPARK, a civic forum to tackle issues in Besant Nagar area. SPARK began with the scientific restoration of the Schmidt memorial. The 94-year-old Kamakshi Subramanian filed her nomination papers as an independent candidate from Chennai's ward 174 comprising Besant Nagar and Adayar area, it is an extension of the long-drawn battle she had undertaken for several civic issues in and around Besant Nagar for the rights of people.

Tamil Nadu observes first full Sunday lockdown as fresh Covid 19 cases cross 10,000 mark

Humane Express | This TN collector is building toilets for disabled people in their homes, for free!

When public spaces lag in becoming accessible to persons with disabilities, the Virudhunagar district has pioneered a scheme to ensure that at least the basic needs of the disabled persons can be met in their homes. Realising that very few houses have toilets that are disabled-friendly and no government scheme exists to fill this gap, the district officials, led by Collector J Meghanatha Reddy, created a project named Udhayam to build accessible toilets.
