BANGALORE: Have you ever come across a tailoring training centre without sewing machines? One can see such unique tailoring training centre at Murphy Town in Hoysalanagar ward where majority of the families belong to below poverty line (BPL) category.
There are around 50 women undergoing training in tailoring. They have been learning embroidery only. They do not have the opportunity to have a hands-on training in tailoring. “I joined this tailoring training centre with a lot of hope. I expected to supplement my husband’s income by working as a tailor after completing the training,’’ said a trainee at the centre on condition of anonymity.
It was believed that the BBMP authorities have supplied sewing machines in 1994 and forgot about the existence of these machines. It may not be an exaggeration to say that not even a single sewing machine is fit for working.
The mounds of mud and debris are a classic example of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities’ perfunctory attitude. “Debris and mud were dumped here a few months ago. No effort has been made to clear the mess yet,’’ said one of the tailoring teachers.
The choked drains and unhygienic surroundings make life miserable for the trainees here.
“Mosquitoes have become a menace for us. The surroundings stink too,’’ said one of the trainees.
Meanwhile, Savitha Ramesh, Corporator, said that she would discuss with BBMP authorities to supply sewing machines to the tailoring training centre. “I will take up this issue with the welfare department of the BBMP shortly,’’ said Savitha.
