BANGALORE: The `350-crore B-Trac project of Bangalore traffic police was awarded recently for its successful egovernance initiative.

The Government of India’s Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances announced the award.

M N Reddy, the then additional commissioner of traffic (now Additional Director General of Police — Police Housing Corporation) was behind initiating the project.

ADGP M N Reddy said B-Trac was mooted when the then police commissioner, retired DG&IGP Dr Ajai Kumar Singh, asked him to do something about the traffic issues in the city.

Reddy said he had once participated in a traffic training programme in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from where he got the idea for B-Trac.

“I prepared the project and Singh sent the proposal to the government.

Now, it’s doing well and road users are the beneficiaries,” he said.

Reddy said the cost of the project was estimated to be `350 crore with the funding from central and state governments.

Reddy was also behind launching the Enforcement Automation Centre.

Beginning of B-Trac

Even though B-Trac has been implemented in the city during 2008, 2009 and 2010 with about `120-crore financial support, the project was initiated in 2006-07.

It is named B-Trac 2010 because it had a five-year term, from 2006-07 to 2010-11. The contribution from the state government was `193 crore and the remaining money was to be funded by the Union government.

The project was outsourced to the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd in 2006.

What is B-Trac

It is based on the ‘input-processoutput’ model. The input is from the field officers, signals, blackberries etc. and the information is processed in the traffic control rooms/traffic management centre (TMC).

From there, the alerts are given to tackle traffic problems like road diversions, no parking, alerting via mobile SMSs, FM radios, VMS (Variable Message Signs), etc.
