The pilot project of ‘No Horn Mondays’ campaign, an initiative of the Bangalore traffic police and the KSPCB, was success in Koramangala.
Now, the campaign will be held across the city.
According to KSPCB, an average horn produces a noise level of 98 decibels (dB), against the 55 dB limit set by the KSPCB in residential areas.
In commercial and industrial areas, the noise limit is 65 dB and 85 dB respectively.“The campaign in Koramangala seems positive. There was a reduction in noise pollution by 3.8 pc at BDA Complex in Koramangala as well as 5.4 pc near Sony World Junction,” said Nitin Sheshadri, general secretary of Kormangala Resident Welfare Association.
“We will reach out to people and ask them not to honk unnecessarily near signals, hospitals, and residential areas.
Most of the people do not realise that horns in their vehicles, which are fitted from vehicle accessory outlets, are illegal and often are above prescribed limits.
Even a two-wheeler horn sounds like that of a truck nowadays,” said Vaman Acharya, Chairman, KSPCB. The campaign in its initial stage will focus on spreading the word across the city. The KSPCB hopes that people will adopt the new rule on other days as well
