K V Subbanna Aptha Rangamandira, a cultural centre has been around for a while now. Over the course of two years, they have screened several acclaimed Kannada films, in association with the Film Study Circle  founded by Girish Kasaravalli.

However, in the last six months the study circle has made efforts to create an environment that fosters sensitivity towards films from around the world.

“The study circle started about five or six years ago. We began with holding the screenings and discussions in the houses of people from the Kannada arts and culture scene - Ramdas Naidu, B Suresha, Nagabharana, S Ramachandra and more. Then for about a year, we held screenings at Suchitra Film Society. But because of certain difference of opinion, we finally shifted base to the K V Subanna centre,” said Girish Kasaravalli.

The Film Study Circle, invites renowned Kannada film-makers to pick a film of their choice and the film screening is usually followed by a lengthy discussion about the various aspects of the film. “We have about fifty people coming to these screenings. They are mostly youngsters in their twenties and early thirties, and we also have film and theatre students from across the State dropping in,” said Gopinath, the founder of K V Subbana Aptha Rangamandira.

The centre has organised several interesting events like, Nirbhaya: Women’s Film Week’ which screened movies like Gulabi Talkies, Vimochane, Bhageerati and more; the Rituparno Ghosh tribute which had movies like Unishe April and Dahan; and other foreign films like Amour by Michael Haneke.

“The main purpose of holding these screenings is to help people understand the medium better. We also want to see what’s happening around the world when it comes to cinema,” informed Kasaravalli.

The centre will be screening Lights on Adoor Goapalakrishnan, a documentary film, that explores the acclaimed director’s work on  August 25 at 4 PM. The film has been directed by Prasanna Ramaswamy, a theatre director with 22 full length productions and a recipient of the Kerala State award for theatre.
