As if the problems regarding unapproved MBBS seats were not enough, the Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathy (AYUSH) institutions in the state too are under scanner. As many as 36 private AYUSH colleges have not been accorded recognition by the Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) for the 2013 admissions.
A Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) officer, said, “Of the 58 private AYUSH college, 36 have been derecognised and the inspection of these institutions will be conducted by the CCIM throughout July. The seat matrix of the AYUSH courses was not sent to the KEA as the recognition for the 2013 academic year has not yet been received. Students have already sent in mock options for AYUSH courses, but as of now, the KEA has not received any information on the seat matrix.”
The officer added that unless the seat matrix is sent, the counselling process for the ayurveda courses cannot be conducted.
Vijayakumar Gogi, director, Department of AYUSH, said, “The inspection of the three government ayurveda colleges has been completed in June, whereas the inspection of private institutions is being conducted at present. The inspection is being conducted for fresh admissions and the derecognition will not hamper the studies of the students enrolled already.”
Gogi said, “Some of the reasons for the derecognition are student-teacher ratio deficit and lack of infrastructure requirements. CCIM and Central Council of Homeopathy have laid down certain mandatory requirements for the institutions to abide by, failing which they will be derecognised.”
An officer from the Medical Education Department said, “The seats enhanced for the 2013 academic year in BMCRI, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute and KIMS Hubli, have been approved by the MCI. However, the Bidar and Raichur Institutes of Medical Sciences are yet to get approval for seat enhancement.”
