Citizens’ groups want more say in governance

Express News Service

A group of over 300 resident welfare associations, under the banner of the Namma Bengaluru Foundation, will soon present a charter of demands before the state government calling for greater citizen involvement in government decisions.

“We want to offer our support and participate in seeking solutions to issues in the city. On Friday, we will present the charter to the chief minister as well as to more than 20 MLAs from the city at a function at Town Hall,” said Foundation director Mahalakshmi at a press meet here on Wednesday.

The charter will contain a wish list of the various associations, an action plan for the city and demands for greater citizen involvement. “Three issues will be focused on in the charter - infrastructure development, transparency in government and maintenance of existing infrastructure,” she said.

The charter will also renew demands for speedy acceptance of the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Governance Bill. Another topic which the Foundation wants to raise with the government is the constitution of ward committees in the BBMP. “We do not want nomination to be the method of choosing members in the committee. We want elections. The rules and composition have not been notified and no meetings are being held,” said Citizen Action Forum coordinator Rajshekar.
