The highest decision-making body of Bangalore University (BU), the Syndicate, may be headed for a rejig as the Department of Higher Education is contemplating recalling its nominees.
Well-placed sources confirmed that the department is planning to recall state-nominated members from the BU Syndicate. “The department has also sought files pertaining to the Syndicate nominations made by the state in all public universities,” a source said.
A senior official from the department told Express that the move is intended to replace the existing state nominees with ‘educationists’ as stipulated in Section 28(g) of the Karnataka State Universities (KSU) Act, 2000.
The Act provides the state government to nominate “six members from amongst eminent educationists” to the Syndicate of a public university. The BU has a total of 21 members in its Syndicate. The six members are D S Krishna (social worker), K V Acharya (retired professor), Manasa Nagabhushanam (academic researcher), Zaheda Mulla (private sector), T H Srinivasaiah (faculty in a private college) and C K Jagdish Prasad (advocate).
“Another reason for such contemplation is because of instances where these members have unduly influenced policy decision of the university,” said an official from BU on condition of anonymity.
