Vanishing footpaths: No attention paid to pedestrians

Express News Service

The latest victim of miserable footpaths is Jayanagar 8th block, Yediyur. Apart from uneven footpaths, broken slabs and encroachment are the common problems here. Undoubtedly, the footpaths in this area are crying for help.

If you take a walk through this lane, you can see garages and shops using the footpaths as a parking lot. The garage opposite the Bajaj Popular showroom has not left any space on the footpaths for the

pedestrians.

Speaking about the problem here, Venkataswamy A, a resident said, “There is absolutely no parking facility here. Naturally, people are forced to park on the footpaths. So, most of the time, we see people walking on the roads. In fact, new stalls were built on the footpath here as an alternative for merchants selling fruits, vegetables and flowers in the market. However, these were demolished recently.

“We understand the inconvenience but at the same time everyone gets fresh flowers and vegetables in this market. So, people usually don’t mind walking on the roads,” said Malathi, a resident.

Contradicting her opinion, Mohan Kumar, another resident said, “No attention is paid to the plight of pedestrians here. We are forced to walk on the roads putting our lives at risk all the time as there are several trucks and buses using this road regularly,” said Mohan.

Moreover, advertisement boards are a common sight here. Residents complain that no attention is taken by the authority to clean up the mess in the area.

Despite repeated calls, the corporator was not available for any response.
