Lessons in art shows

Rachelle Chandran

A private art gallery has collaborated with an art school in a first-of-its-kind initiative to help students understand how art is curated and how a show is organised. Over 14 students from Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology were involved in an exhibition, Portrayed, where the works on display were produced by the students themselves.

The works varied in style, moods and expressions. During the four-day exhibition, Gallery-g helped the young artists-the-making understand what it means to represent  art.

The preview on September 6 started with the lighting of the traditional lamp by chief guest Dharma Kannan, dean, Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Mary Kuruvilla, dean, professional diploma programme, Srishti and Gita Maini, owner, Gallery-g. This was followed by poetry reading and music performances by the students. The evening also witnessed a live performance by artist Sohil Bhatia.

Speaking about the exhibition and the workshop, Gita said, “It has been a lovely experience to mentor the students. During an 11-day workshop, the students ideated, created a schedule and worked really hard to put up the show. They have outdone my expectations. They completed the entire process a day before.”

When asked about their learning experience, Purva, a third year student at Srishti, said, “It was a very productive interaction. Fourteen of us worked on the exhibition and everyone had something to do and contribute. Now, I feel confident about putting up a show all by myself. Gita has been an amazing influence, she even funded the entire project.”
