BENGALURU: Jayanagar police have arrested a 34-year-old former employee of a software company for committing thefts in jewellery shops and escaping with gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh.The arrested has been identified as Prabhu Kanakaratnama, a native of Tamil Nadu, who was staying in Yelahanka New Town along with his mother.
A senior police officer said that the incident took place at VBJ jewellery shop in Jayanagar and the staff had filed a case on January 13. Based on CCTV footage, the details of the accused were gathered and he was nabbed at his house on Friday. He was handed over to judicial custody. During the interrogation, he revealed another theft which he had committed in Malleswaram in 2017.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Prabhu was working in a reputed software company in Koramangala after completing his engineering in a private college in Mathikere in 2007. Later, he pursued an MBA graduation from a reputed university in London. He had returned to India in 2015 and was working in a private software firm. He resigned from work due to health issues and started his own business. After incurring a huge loss, he decided to start stealing from jewellery shops to make easy money. His modus operandi was lifting gold chains when the staff were busy showing ornaments to other customers. He used to visit these shops well dressed and was behaved well with the staff so that they wouldn’t suspect him.
