BENGALURU: “Dhruv Jatin Thakkar, 19, who jumped in front of an approaching Metro train at Attiguppe station, often used to feel that his life was meaningless. He had shared his live location with his parents seconds before taking the extreme step,” a senior police officer said, adding that it was planned.
“Dhruv, a first-year BA LLB student of National Law School of India University, was under medication and attending counselling sessions,” a police officer said.
Dhruv’s family was aware of his treatment for extreme depression, he added.
The senior officer said Dhruv, who was residing in the college hostel at Nagarabhavi, used to frequently tell his college friends about his suicidal thoughts. Before taking the extreme step, Dhruv, who was speaking with his parents over the phone, told them that life seemed meaningless to him. Hearing this, his parents suggested that he go to Cubbon Park and spend some time there. Shortly after ending the call, Dhruv shared his live location with his parents via WhatsApp and then took the extreme step.
Unable to reach Dhruv on phone, his parents called his friend and requested him to check their son’s whereabouts. However, they were soon informed about his death.
In a statement, NLSIU vice-chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy said, “The university is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden and unexpected demise of one of our students. As a mark of respect, the university will suspend classes for the remainder of the week.”
“Dhruv was a warm and compassionate person, and a bright and diligent student, well-liked by his peers and faculty. The NLS community stands in solidarity with his grieving family and friends in this period of deep sadness. The university staff are working closely with the authorities and extending all support to his family members. We request all members of the community to respect the privacy of the family at this time,” Krishnaswamy said.
Chandra Layout police have registered a case of unnatural death.
