MUSIC can be enjoyed only when the various factors, that mould the inherent values of it are grasped and presented by the artiste, in a style and in a voice, which would not result in a ponderous turgid style of presentation.
These thoughts came to my mind, listening to Vocalist TN Seshagopalan’s concert at Parthasarathy Swami Sabha. Though his voice did not cooperate initially, we saw his creative impulses and imagination, which were in full flow, in Thelisi Rama by Thyagaraja in raga Poorna Chandrika and in Thiruppavai (Aazhi Mazhai Kanna).
The felicity with which he gave an exquisite interpretation of raga Madyamavathi (Sri Parthasarathy) by Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar, clearly indicated his remarkable hold on laya, which reminded us of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar.
Special mention is to be made of his Kalyani raga alapana, which he rendered with subtle touches of raga Bhava and his wonderful imagination replete with swaras that came to the fore, and his rendition of Pankaja lochani, sailing on tone and accent, which was indicative of his musical capability to handle the passages with tidiness.
There was a divine appeal, when he took up Nayaki raga kriti Renganayakam and Gaana Moorthae in raga Gaana Moorthae. On the whole, the concert revealed that the music was timeless, which was evident from the appeal it had on the milieu.
The phrasing of M. Chandrasekaran (Violin) was sweet and T.K. Moorthy, the veteran mirdangist, gave admissible support with subdued hand in accordance with the need of the day. T.V.Vasan on ghatam gave adequate support with gusto.
