CHENNAI: Traffic jams which have become a part and parcel of the lives of Chennaiites may soon end in a part of the city, with the much delayed over bridge at Maduvankarai most likely to be opened to the public by November 15.

Speaking to this website's newspaper, Chairman, Alandur Municipality, R S Barathy, said he was waiting for an appointment with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Union Minister T R Baalu. “The work is over and the bridge is most likely to be opened by November 15,” he said.

The new rail-over bridge would link Maduvankarai, on the Race Course Road side of Guindy, with the arterial GST Road, besides MKN Road and the Alandur market area.

Everyday thousands of people residing in Adambakkam, Ullagaram -Puzhuthivakkam and Madipakkam take the Maduvankarai route to reach several destinations in and around the city. The new facility would also prove to be a boon to the residents of Alandur and Velachery.

Currently, to reach GST Road from Velachery, most people travel up to Halda point and take a turn there.

With the opening of the bridge, people could take the Five Furlong Road, reach Chakrapani Street and then take the over-bridge and arrive at the Kathipara grade-separator in a matter of minutes. This means saving time and fuel.

This is the only over-bridge that links Adambakkam, Madipakkam, Nanganallur and Pazhavanthangal areas with the GST Road side. With all existing facilities being subways, people had a tough time during rainy days, as the tunnels got inundated and flushing out water took a horribly long time.

Local residents, officials of welfare associations, including the Guindy Exnora Innovators Club, expressed happiness over the coming of the new facility.

“We hope our troubles would soon be over,” said S Srinivasan, a member of the Secretariat Colony Residents Association.
