Chennai to host all-India film staff meet

CHENNAI: About 30,000 employees of the film industry, representing 24 different crafts, from all over the country will be converging in Chennai between October 9 and 11 for the ninth All India Film Employees Conference (AIFEC), which come back to the city after 36 years.

Disclosing details of the event,  V C Guhanathan, president of the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) said: “We are happy that representatives from all the 24 film crafts from  all the filmmaking regions will be present at the conference. Resolutions passed will be sent to the Union and State labour ministries for implementation.” To be held at the Nehru Stadium and the Chennai Trade Centre, the conference will be headed by filmmaker K Balachander.  

“On the first day, problems of employees from all regions will be addressed after which a massive cultural event presided over by the Chief Minister will be held. Artistes from all regions will participate. The next day, resolutions will be passed and put before the head of the conference. On day three, elections to the AIFEC will be held. The new committee will assume office and  pass the necessary resolutions discussed, which will then  be  forwarded  to the Union and State labour ministries,” he said.

Another cultural event will be held at the closing ceremony by artistes from all regional federations. Guhananthan said the main aim of the conference is to foster good relations between all the regional artistes and federations and develop an amicable atmosphere for resolving problems. In order to facilitate attendance at the conference, no film shooting will take place in Tamil Nadu during the three-day conference.
